Yount elected American Academy of Microbiology fellow
The American Academy of Microbiology has elected Jacob Yount, PhD, professor of Microbial Infection and Immunity at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, as a fellow to its Class of 2026. Fellows of the academy, the honorific leadership group and scientific think tank within the American Society for Microbiology, are elected annually through a highly selective, peer-review process based on their records of scientific achievement and original contributions that have advanced microbiology. Yount’s research focuses on understanding and combating human respiratory and cardiac viral diseases.
 
Ohio State Wexner Medical Center recognized for outstanding contributions to cardio-oncology
The International Cardio-Oncology Society (IC-OS) designated The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center as a Gold Standard Center of Excellence for outstanding professional contributions to the field of cardio-oncology. IC-OS is a global group of medical professionals committed to raising awareness about cardiovascular diseases that commonly occur in patients undergoing treatment for cancer.
 
Mehta named American College of Cardiology Distinguished Fellow
The American College of Cardiology (ACC) named Laxmi Mehta, MD, its 2026 Distinguished Fellow for her outstanding contributions in advancing science, knowledge and innovation to improve cardiovascular care and patient outcomes worldwide. Mehta is director of Preventative Cardiology and Women’s Cardiovascular Health at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and a professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. Mehta, who is also the Sarah Ross Soter Endowed Chair for Women’s Cardiovascular Health Research, will be honored in March during ACC’s annual meeting. 
 
Ohio State Wexner Medical Center new member of Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research alliance
The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is one of seven new members of the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research Global Sarcoidosis Clinic Alliance. The organization is a global network of leading sarcoidosis clinics and hospitals committed to advancing research, strengthening clinician engagement and improving care for people living with sarcoidosis. In March, The Ohio State University will host the 5th annual International Cardiac Sarcoidosis Symposium in collaboration with the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research. Elliott Crouser, MD, professor of Internal Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, serves as chair of FSR’s Scientific Advisory Board, and Maneesh Bhargava, MBBS, PhD, professor of Internal Medicine, was elected a board member last year.
 
Gumina elected to Association of University Cardiologists
Richard Gumina, MD, PhD, director of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and professor of Internal Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, was elected to the Association of University Cardiologists. Gumina is also the James W. Overstreet Chair in Cardiology at Ohio State. The association is limited to 175 U.S. academic cardiologists who shape the course of research and training in cardiovascular disease nationwide.
 
Ohio State Wexner Medical Center named an Ataxia Center of Excellence
The National Ataxia Foundation (NAF) has named The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center as an Ataxia Center of Excellence (ACE). There are 43 ACEs worldwide, including 32 in the U.S. Ataxia is a rare, progressive neurological disease that affects a person’s ability to walk, talk and use fine motor skills. Established in 1957, NAF supports research and seeks to improve quality of life for those affected.
