MedTips: Awards and announcements from The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center

 

 

Forbes named The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center as one of America’s Best Large Employers. Thirty-two large hospitals and health systems were on the list for 2024. Forbes partnered with Statista Inc. to survey U.S. employees on how they rated their employer and if they would recommend their employer to others. The final score was based on two types of evaluations: personal (given by employees) and public (given by friends and family members of employees or members of the public who work in the same industry). For the first time, data from the past three years was included to better identify companies that have consistently rated well. 

 

 

Mina Makary, MD, clinical professor of radiology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, and his interventional radiology team received the 2023 Distinguished Clinical Study Award for their work on how to improve public awareness of interventional radiology options. The international award from the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology recognizes research that could positively impact the interventional community and improve patient care. Makary also was named to Columbus Business First’s 2024 class of 40 under 40, which recognizes the best and brightest young leaders in central Ohio. 

 

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center will be a part of a new public-private partnership to develop tools to identify pregnant women at high risk of early-onset preeclampsia. Ohio State’s maternal fetal medicine team will lead the project collaborating with the National Institutes of Health and eight other partners from life sciences companies, academia and nonprofit and patient advocacy organizations.

 

At the conclusion of the study, the project team will submit a letter of intent to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Biomarkers Qualification Program, an important step toward obtaining regulatory approval for further use of these biomarkers. Preeclampsia is a serious pregnancy-related hypertensive disorder that can lead to maternal and neonatal deaths and long-term negative health outcomes. 

 

Christopher Nguyen, PhD, clinical assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral health at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, was appointed as the 2023-2024 chair of the American Psychological Association’s Committee on Aging (CONA). The goal of CONA is to advance scientific knowledge of adult development and aging through clinical practice, research, education, advocacy and public affairs. 

 

Matthew Corriere, MD, has been appointed director of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s Division of Vascular Surgery. A nationally recognized leader in vascular surgery, Corriere came from the University of Michigan where he was the Frankel Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery. Corriere is an expert in the treatment of aortic, carotid, mesenteric, renal and peripheral artery disease. He has co-authored clinical practice guidelines and scientific statements related to peripheral artery disease on behalf of the American Heart Association, the Society for Vascular Surgery and the Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Society. He serves as an examiner for the American Board of Surgery Vascular Surgery Certifying Examination and is on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Medical Devices Advisory Committee as a Circulatory Systems Devices panelist.

Daniel Gallego-Perez, PhD, has been inducted into The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) College of Fellows. Gallego-Perez is an associate professor of general surgery and biomedical engineering at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, College of Medicine and College of Engineering. Gallego-Perez was elected “for outstanding contributions to the development of nanotechnology-based platforms for non-viral gene delivery, tissue reprogramming, regenerative medicine, and cancer therapies.” Fellows represent the top 2% of the medical and biological engineering community in the U.S.
