COLUMBUS, Ohio – Together with representatives of the Near East Side community, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has decided to assess additional options for building a new Dodd Rehabilitation Hospital in order to preserve the Henderson House, a 19th century home that sits on the proposed hospital site at Taylor Avenue and Atchison Street.
The medical center is committed to saving the house from demolition and will continue to work closely with the community on next steps.
“Ohio State heard us. They are with us at the table, and not just about this concern over the new hospital and the house. I’m encouraged by this process of building a partnership that will work on the mutually important matters for our community,” said Julialynne Walker, JD, chair of the Near East Side advisory committee and chair of the Franklin Park Civic Association.
The medical center is also partnering with the community on other projects, including the programs residents want to see in the new Healthy Community Center, slated to open in early 2024.
“It is important that we continue to work with the community to determine the best approach on our shared priorities. The medical center is part of the fabric of the Near East Side. We are invested in the long-term health and wellness of our neighbors,” said Chyke Doubeni, MD, chief health equity officer at The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center.
“I applaud the work we’ve done together. Ohio State Wexner Medical Center and what they bring to our community is important. I’m excited about our collaborative work moving forward,” said Willis Brown, member of the Near East Side advisory committee and president of the Bronzeville Neighborhood Association.
The medical center is currently evaluating alternative sites for the new rehabilitation hospital, and additional details will be shared once a site is chosen.
