COLUMBUS, Ohio – Twenty years ago today, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center opened East Hospital with an emphasis on providing high-quality healthcare services in near east Columbus and the surrounding communities.

The 190-bed hospital brings academic medicine to a community setting and offers a full range of medical and surgical services, including heart, stroke, orthopedic, mental health and emergency medical care. 

“Our anniversary theme – Community Care: 20 Years and Counting – honors the past while emphasizing our ongoing commitment to innovative healthcare solutions to improve health and wellness in our communities,” said David McQuaid, CEO of The Ohio State University Health System and chief operating officer of Ohio State Wexner Medical Center.

Over the past 20 years, there have been several major milestones at East Hospital. Some highlights include:

  • April 2000: Talbot Hall becomes the home of comprehensive inpatient and outpatient drug and alcohol addiction recovery services for all Ohio State Wexner Medical Center patients.
  • April 2000: East Hospital hosts the first Healthy Community Day offering free health screenings and services.
  • May 2005: East Hospital opens the Ohio State Sleep Disorders Center featuring state-of-the-art technology to diagnose sleep disorders.
  • July 2005: East Hospital opens new 25-bed emergency department.
  • December 2010: Ohio State supports the creation of Partners Achieving Community Transformation (PACT) with a $10-million commitment to create a healthy, financially and environmentally sustainable community where residents have access to safe and affordable housing, quality health care, education and employment opportunities.
  • September 2011: Outpatient Care East (formerly CarePoint East) opens just a few blocks from East Hospital, offering a variety of primary and specialty care services in an outpatient setting.
  • September 2018: East Hospital achieves provisional Level III trauma center designation from the Ohio Department of Public Safety and the Ohio Department of Health.
  • November 2018: East Hospital breaks ground on a new $26 million outpatient surgery unit and imaging suite.

“We’re just getting started,” said Mary Howard, executive director of East Hospital. “As we pause to reflect on our vital mission of patient care, medical research and training, we have a renewed focus on improving our facilities and refining services to best meet the complex health needs of our patients.”

East Hospital was previously known as St. Anthony Hospital. The Sisters of the Poor of St. Francis opened the original hospital in 1890.
