As a fellow, you will train under some of the nation’s top clinicians, educators and researchers. We have a highly collaborative faculty network, participate in numerous multi-center national clinical trials, offer educational didactic lecture series and exposure to stroke program QA that will stimulate the development of an outstanding career. Fellows who complete training in our ACGME vascular neurology fellowship program will be eligible for board certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Vascular Neurology Fellowship Process

The Division of Cerebrovascular Diseases and Neurocritical Care offers two fellowship positions per year for neurologists interested in pursuing subspecialty training in vascular neurology. The ACGME-accredited 12-month program involves clinical training and research in stroke and cerebrovascular diseases.

The Vascular Neurology Fellowship curriculum places a heavy emphasis on acute stroke management, stroke neurocritical care and endovascular neurosurgery.

At Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, you will have full access to state-of-the-art technology including Advanced neuroimaging (CT angiography, CT perfusion), high field MRI, portable MRI (Hyperfine), TCD, Artificial intelligence platform for neuroimaging (Viz.AI) and telestroke. You will also gain experience with telemedicine technology through our collaboration with several hospitals in rural central Ohio. The OSU telestroke network is the largest independent telestroke network in the state of Ohio, and we serve over 30 spoke Emergency rooms in central Ohio.

Our curriculum includes:

  • Stroke/Neurovascular Wards & Consult: 6 blocks
  • Neurocritical Care: 2 blocks
  • Outpatient Stroke Clinic: 2 blocks
  • Elective (includes vacation)*: 3 blocks

1 block = 4 weeks

*Elective options include (but are not limited to) Outpatient Clinic, Telestroke, Diagnostic Neuroradiology, Neurocritical Care, Endovascular Neurosurgery, Neurosonology, Neuroimaging, research and stroke consult service.

Call is home call only. You will have a supervisory role in neurovascular service, which typically consists of one senior neurology resident, one junior neurology resident, several nurse practitioners, one pharmacist and medical students.

You will have a weekly cerebrovascular continuity clinic staffed by a supervising attending vascular neurologist.

Our five core faculty physicians are all ABPN-certified in vascular neurology and four have additional certification in neurocritical care by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties. Our stroke program team includes three dual trained open vascular and endovascular neurosurgeons.

You will serve as an integral member of our research team. We participate in over a dozen funded national clinical trials (including several National Institutes of Health trials) including many pivotal transformative acute stroke trials. You will be encouraged to formulate an independent research project under the guidance of a faculty member for presentation at a national meeting or publication.

How to Apply

The OSUMC offers a one-year ACGM-accredited fellowship in vascular neurology. Currently, two fellows are accepted each year through the NRMP Match. Applications are submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), which accepts applications beginning November/December (Please check ERAS website for timeline). Once received, your application will be reviewed, and we will respond with a decision to interview. Interviews are virtual and conducted by invitation only and will be scheduled from December – March.
