• Services research and quality improvement in systems of care
• Improving the competence of the MH workforce, especially focusing on the care of the seriously mentally ill
• Best practices for psychosis
• Integration of behavioral health and physical health care

• Antipsychotic use in hospital, community and state and national systems

• “Advancing Evidence-Based Practices for Psychosis”
• “Family and Consumer Advocacy for Gold Standard Treatment of Schizophrenia”

Research Techniques:

• Analyze hospital and Medicaid databases for persons with schizophrenia and psychosis.
• Measure workforce numbers and project future needs using health economics.
• Measure psychiatry residents’ competency in treating SMI populations by exam, exposure to clinical settings, exposure to educational opportunities.
• Survey Psychiatry program directors and Psychiatry residents regarding curriculum and educational experiences in integrated care, leadership, telemedicine, etc.
• Work with other university training programs to improve education of the mental health and primary care workforces.

Background: Dr. Svendsen served for 17 years as the medical director for the Ohio Department of Mental Health. He was also chief of the Ohio State Mental Health and Sports Psychology Clinic at the Wilce Student Health Service for 17 years.
