Ohio Valley Center (OVC) for Brain Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation provides education and training, conducts research and develops new programs for rehabilitation following a traumatic brain injury (TBI). The OVC serves as the umbrella for TBI grant funding and research within Ohio State’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Our Services
Since 1993, the OVC has operated the Ohio Regional Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Model System, one of only 16 centers in the nation designated by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) as a model for TBI rehabilitation treatment and research.
Research: The Ohio Regional TBI Model System gathers long-term, outcomes information on patients who are part of the TBI Model System’s national database. This information allows researchers to determine the effectiveness of past rehabilitative treatments so that they can advance current and future treatment programs.
Advocacy: The OVC Advisory Council consists of consumers, brain injury advocates, health care professionals and rehabilitation researchers. These professionals help set OVC goals and direct the development and implementation of new projects and materials.
OVC receives grants from national, regional and local organizations. These grants fund clinical trials and other research focused on improving brain injury rehabilitation. Funding sources include:
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
- National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research
- Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center
- Center for Substance Abuse Treatment at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
- Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission
- Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services
Information: In addition, OVC offers information about brain injury and treatment to the public and to professionals, including:
- The Substance Abuse Education Series – Designed for health care professionals, this series helps patients with TBI who have experienced difficulty with alcohol or drug use.
- The OSU TBI Identification Method (TBI-ID) – Used by researchers and professionals, this tool helps to determine a patient's lifetime history of TBI.
