Biography
My patient care philosophy is focused on providing high quality, evidence-based care. This requires taking time to understand each patient’s unique situation, challenges and goals.
My specialty is orthopedic surgery, with a primary focus in hip preservation. I treat all types of hip conditions. My surgical expertise includes hip arthroscopy and hip osteotomies.
The most satisfying aspect of my job is meeting a patient who needs help, creating a personalized treatment plan and following through until full recovery is achieved. It’s incredibly rewarding to see our patients regain the ability to enjoy an active lifestyle.
I enjoy working at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center because it offers a warm, collegial environment, with continuous efforts to improve the quality of the care we provide and genuine compassion for those who need help.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
As of 11/3/2025, John Ryan has reported no relationships with companies or entities.

Great provider. Answered all of my questions.
Dr Ryan was very nice and explained to me the pros of having my surgery and the cons he was very good about working around my schedule to have my surgery
Dr. Ryan is very caring and patient. I feel like he listens to my concerns and gave me choices about the next steps to meet my needs.
He treated me with respect and kindness. And listen to what I had to say. And I would like to say Thank you too everyone.
Thankful that he listened and understood. Better than any doctor I had seen for the same issue previously
Dr Ryan was fantastic! I was referred to him from an outside position to see if he could do anything further about my hip issues and he was very honest helpful, and helped explain my condition and was open to answering questions. Great visit
Gave me more than enough information about my condition.
I was very impressed with Dr Ryan. He showed me my MRI, he seemed willing to talk with m as long as needed. He pointed out another area of concern that he wanted to make sure I was aware of even though it was not related to my visit with him. I was very impressed because the referring Orthos office did not mention this area of concern. I had read the report and I caught it earlier and pointed it out to my primary care. We are taking action on that concern. Dr Ryan was on top of it
Listened. Answered my questions and addressed concerns.
Excellent!! He did not type, he looked me straight in the eye and was very engaged.
Great!
