Biography
As a cardiac electrophysiologist, I provide treatment and management for all kinds of heart rhythm disorders. I believe in treating my patients the way I would want my own family to be treated. I take the time to meet with my patients and thoroughly cover all information relating to their condition while encouraging them to engage and ask questions. Besides performing various cardiac device implantations and catheter ablation procedures, I’m also keenly interested in preventative aspects of heart rhythm disorders.
My research interests include outcomes of emerging technology in heart rhythm disorders and stroke prophylaxis with left atrial appendage closure devices. I have actively involved myself in electrophysiology research for over a decade, and published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers.
I enjoy working at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center because it gives me access to the most innovative and evidence-based treatments.

At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. Dr. Afzal was very patronizing. He spoke to me like he was speaking to a child, and referred to me as a "young girl" several times, despite the fact that I am a 35 year old woman. He also made assumptions about my lifestyle habits, dismissing my health concern- he told me that I am dehydrated and that I don't eat enough, and that is what is causing my symptoms. He did not ask me about my fluid intake or my nutrition before stating what he assumed to be facts about me.

This appointment was for a second opinion. He was very friendly, respectful, and wanted to understand my experience with the onset and subsequent history with my Afib. He explained everything in great detail and offered recommendations/options for me to consider for treating my paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. This was extremely helpful and comforting.
