Academics and research
I specialize in the treatment of sports injuries, including both operative and non-operative care. While I treat injuries throughout the body, my primary area of interest is the knee. I am interested in ligament injuries, such as the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and dislocations of the kneecap. My role as both a clinician and researcher allows me to translate the results of my research in these areas directly to my patients.
Research interests
- Ligament Injuries
- Anterior Cruciate Ligaments (ACL)
- Dislocations of the Kneecap

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
As of 11/3/2025, Dr. Magnussen has reported no relationships with companies or entities.

Spoke fast and finished up quickly! Felt I left with questions unanswered!
He was great and so was his resident doctor assistant person. They both explained things very smoothly and understandably
Dr. "Bob" Magnussen came in after seeing Athletic trainer (forget name) and the both instantly knew my issue with my right knee and how to attack the issue and get me back mobile. I greatly appreciate them both listening to me ramble about my issue l can tell you I am 100% improved since seeing them.
Dr. Magnussen Is an awesome physician. He listens carefully and takes concerns seriously. He is compassionate and kind. I still don't know whether the surgery he did for me will work out for mebut he was positive and upbeat. And he gave me an upbeat last resort' if the surgery didn't work. He is what I wish all physicians would be.
Best provider I have been to thus far. He was extremely patient and understanding of my anxiety. Explained things to ease my anxiety and was very easy to understand and confident in his abilities which calmed my nerves.
Good person
Helped me to determine the care needed and listened to my concerns. Felt that I was important to him to resolve my issues.
I had the best care with both doctors
Good: Empathetic, conservative and decisive approach, answered my questionsBad: Appointments still feel a bit rushed and narrowly focused on surgeon interventions like injections
Everything was good
I'm not sure he got the full picture of the knee pain I was having on a daily basis. The focus was mainly on what to do for running .
Polite and thorough
I wish I didn't feel so rushed and my questions were answered instead of feeling dismissed.
Everything was good
Very good
He is the BEST!
My actual provider, Dr. Magnussen, is fantastic. He was a bit short In our follow-up appointments but it was because his handiwork in the surgery was flawless.
Excellent
Dr. Magnussen is top notch in his field
Excellent Dr very friendly helpful and knowledgeable thanks a lot I'm really grateful to his care and immediate response to my questions
He also seemed in a hurry and very cold
My experience during my visit was very good.
Care provider listened while I explained my injury and made an accurate assessment at this time.
Dr. Magnussen was also excellent. He suggested that physical therapy would be beneficial for me and gave me the option of taking naproxen or a cortisone shot, explaining benefits of each. I chose the cortisone shot because I wanted immediate relief. He made a referral for physical therapy. He has great bedside manner; listened to me.
Dr. Magnusson provided relevant assessment and information regarding my injury. He listened to all my concerns and answered all my questions thoroughly and completely. He was very professional and kind.
Each department offered very helpful service and assistance.
Understood the pain, and took steps to work it out
Very Good
Very kind and compassionate.
He cares a lot and listened to me.
Dr. Magnussen is always respectful and caring.
Saw a resident first. She did a good assessment but wanted to jump into injections when I just wanted to know if my condition worsened. The attending valued my conservative approach and was very informative
I did not relate my concerns about the resident to the doctor. I am pleased with my doctor's care. He is knowledgeable, reassuring, and gentle. I am confident with his teatment plan.
Everyone was very attentive and pleasant
My care provider took a while to make it to my room but when he did he was very knowledgeable and friendly.
Willing to take time to explain things well.
He was extremely knowledgeable and diagnosed the problem very quickly and effectively. He was also very pleasant to talk to. He seemed like he was in a bit of a rush though, which I understand.
Very good
Amazing
Similarly cold - I got the impression that since I wasn't a sports medicine patient, but rather an overweight middle-aged woman, my problem couldn't have been handled by a non-surgeon. He even mentioned at the end of the appt. That I could follow-up with another non-surgeon ortho doctor. Ironically, I did follow-up with the non-surgeon ortho who ended up putting in a consult with a surgeon (I chose a different provider for that appt. )
He answered all my questions.
