Joseph honored with Endocrine Society’s outstanding early career investigator award
Joshua Joseph, MD, associate professor of internal medicine with tenure and endowered professor for research in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, is recipient of the Endocrine Society’s 2024 Richard E. Weitzman Outstanding Early Career Investigator Award. The annual award recognizes an exceptionally promising young clinical or basic investigator. Joseph focuses on advancing prevention and treatment of diabetes and cardiovascular disease through a health equity lens with four pillars: 1) Examining the role of stress hormones in cardiometabolic disease; 2) Health system to community innovations to address social determinants of health in cardiometabolic disease; 3) Community-based participatory research to improve cardiometabolic health; and 4) Quality improvement science to improve the quality of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Joseph treats patients with diabetes and cardiovascular disease at a community-based clinic and serves as chair of the society’s Clinical Affairs Core Committee.  

American Heart Association recognizes Ohio State for high-quality heart failure care
The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has received the American Heart Association’s Get With the Guidelines – Heart Failure Silver Quality Achievement Award for commitment to improving outcomes for patients with heart failure. The award honors hospitals that demonstrate a commitment to treating patients according to the most up-to-date guidelines as outlined by the American Heart Association. The program’s goal is to increase healthy days at home and reduce hospital readmissions for heart failure patients. 

Wold appointed editor-in-chief of Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Journal
The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology has appointed Loren Wold, PhD, editor-in-chief of The FASEB Journal. Wold holds joint appointments at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center as associate dean for research operations and compliance in the College of Medicine, professor in the Division of Cardiac Surgery of the Department of Surgery and The John G. and Jeanne Bonnet McCoy Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine. The Wold lab is funded by multiple grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the American Heart Association. 
 
Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center honored for environmental sustainability
For the third consecutive year, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has been awarded the Greenhealth Emerald Award from Practice Greenhealth, a national organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in health care. The medical center also was selected as a Circles of Excellence winner for sustainable procurement. During the award review period of fiscal year 2022, the medical center’s sustainability efforts resulted in $2 million in cost avoidance, a nearly 5% decrease in energy usage from fiscal year 2020, purchased 29% carbon neutral electricity and diverted 37% of waste from landfills. 

Ohio State Sports Medicine accepted into the Arthritis Foundation’s Osteoarthritis Clinical Trial Network
Laura Schmitt, PhD, and Robert Magnussen, MD, along with their team at Ohio State Sports Medicine were recently accepted into the Arthritis Foundation’s Osteoarthritis Clinical Trial Network (OACTN) as a clinical trial unit. The team will test innovative interventions through multi-site clinical trials for patients after anterior cruciate ligament injury and patients at risk for post-traumatic knee osteoarthritis. Ohio State Sports Medicine’s personnel, infrastructure, readily available resources, robust clinical practice, as well as extensive success and productivity as a collaborative partner in several multi-site trials, were key to its approval as an OACTN site. Participation will require interdisciplinary collaboration across multiple teams within Sports Medicine, such as orthopedic surgery, biomechanics, orthobiologics and physical therapy, as well as across the university in radiology and investigational drug services.
