Biography
I am a professor of Surgery in the Division of General and Gastrointestinal Surgery at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, where I serve as the area medical director for University Hospital Perioperative Services, and as surgical director of the Comprehensive Weight Management and Metabolic/Bariatric Surgery Program.
As a fellowship-trained minimally invasive and bariatric surgeon, I specialize in primary and revisional metabolic surgery, and in advanced endoscopic procedures. I have received multiple Outstanding Achievement in Patient Service Awards, reflecting my commitment to providing safe, compassionate and individualized care for patients living with obesity.
My research focuses on improving outcomes after bariatric and endoscopic surgery and addressing the impact of health care disparities and obesity bias. I have published more than 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters, including contributions to Zollinger’s Atlas of Surgical Operations and Fischer’s Mastery of Surgery. I also serve as deputy editor of Bariatric Surgical Practice and Patient Care, and as a member of the editorial board for Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases.
I am actively involved in national leadership through the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), where I have co-chaired committees focused on quality improvement, patient safety and flexible endoscopy. These roles allow me to help shape the future of metabolic and bariatric surgery while advocating for equity and excellence in patient care.
The most meaningful part of my work is helping patients reclaim their health and independence. For me, surgery is never just about the procedure; it’s about people. Each story is unique, and my greatest reward is seeing patients achieve the health and quality of life they have been striving for.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
