Biography

I am Amariah Hughes, APRN-CNP, and at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, I specialize in palliative medicine nursing care of patients facing serious illness. My practice focuses on symptom management, serious illness communication, goals-of-care discussions, advance care planning and on helping patients and families navigate complex medical decisions.

I chose a career in medicine because I find meaning in building relationships with patients and families and being present during some of their most challenging moments.

My clinical focus is inpatient palliative medicine, where I work closely with patients and families to address symptoms, improve quality of life and support informed decision-making. I am passionate about helping people feel heard, respected and supported throughout their healthcare journey. I believe some of the most meaningful aspects of medicine come from taking the time to understand a patient’s values, goals and definition of quality of life, and then ensuring their care reflects those priorities.

As a family nurse practitioner at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (the OSUCCC – James), I collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care. Working alongside specialists across disciplines allows me to support patients and families through complex healthcare decisions while ensuring that their physical, emotional and personal needs remain at the center of care.

My professional background includes nursing experience in cardiovascular intensive care and trauma care, completion of family nurse practitioner education and board certification, and completion of the Palliative APP Fellowship at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center. These experiences continue to shape my approach to compassionate, individualized care for patients living with serious illness.
