Biography
I work in the field of palliative medicine, specializing in symptom management and end-of-life care. I believe in providing exceptional care to patients who are faced with serious, life-limiting illnesses.
I think it’s important for patients and their families to have an active role in their care. I enjoy helping my patients to explore their values, preferences and goals for their care. I strive to provide effective symptom management for patients throughout the course of their illness, as well as at the end of life.
I love working at a state institution and providing care to a wide variety of patients and their families. There’s a great sense of teamwork and community here at Ohio State.
When I’m not working I enjoy jogging, painting, hiking and exploring Columbus.

Academics and research
I am an emerging clinical and health services researcher focused on the intersection of palliative care, surgical illness, and hepatobiliary disease. I served as site lead at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center for the multi-site, PCORI-funded project: “A Multicenter, Randomized Controlled Trial of Perioperative Palliative Care Surrounding Cancer Surgery for Patients and Their Family Members (PERIOP-PC),” and I have maintained strong research collaborations throughout the OSUCCC – James. In the next phase of my research career, I plan to examine palliative care utilization and outcomes for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, with aim to improve the quality of care delivered to patients and caregivers. My research interests include integrating palliative medicine into the care of patients with end-stage liver disease and other life-limiting illnesses.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
As of 11/3/2025, Dr. Waterman has reported no relationships with companies or entities.
