Biography
I am a board-certified general, forensic and child and adolescent psychiatrist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Cente and a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. My career has focused on the intersection of psychiatry, law, and public policy, with particular expertise in forensic psychiatric evaluation and the application of psychiatric science and practice to legal questions. I currently serve as the director of the Psychiatry and Law Program at The Ohio State University.
My clinical work as a physician in the emergency, inpatient, and outpatient settings focuses on psychiatric emergencies such as suicide and violence, and on the evaluation and treatment of patients with mood, psychotic, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive and somatic symptom disorders, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related disorders.
My forensic practice includes civil and criminal psychiatric evaluations involving adults, adolescents and children conducted for courts, attorneys, governmental agencies, and other organizations. I have been qualified as an expert witness in state and federal courts throughout the United States. My areas of forensic expertise include medical malpractice, institutional negligence, sexual abuse and sexual offending, violence and suicide risk assessment, traumatic brain injury (TBI), PTSD, competency-related evaluations, criminal responsibility, child custody matters, capital sentencing evaluations including mitigation, threat assessment, and the relationship between mental illness, neurodevelopment and criminal behavior.
I was the Vice Chair of Clinical Services/Affairs at Ohio State’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health from 2017-2026 and Interim Chair of the department from 2018-2019.
I have authored numerous scientific publications and book chapters, have developed educational programs in forensic psychiatry, and have lectured nationally and internationally on topics including suicide, malingering, capital sentencing, juvenile justice, trauma, forensic risk assessment, criminal sentencing, competency, and the impact of developmental neuroscience on legal decision-making.
I strive to bring scientific evidence, empathy, integrity, and respect to every forensic evaluation and clinical encounter.
