Biography

I am a board-certified neurologist and vascular neurologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. I specialize in stroke and cerebrovascular diseases. As a health services researcher I study how to optimize care systems, and I try to incorporate that perspective into my clinical care – considering the costs, harms and inconveniences of medical care as well as the benefits of care. Similarly, given that much medical care is of modest net benefit, I try to understand patient values and figure out how to make the right decision for different patients based on their values.

Academics and research

I trained in Neurology and Vascular Neurology at the University of Michigan, completed health services research training through the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program, and served on the faculty of UM before joining Ohio State to co-direct the HSR Neurology Division. I have been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health, and my research has focused on a variety of topics including individualized treatment decisions, understanding racial disparities in stroke outcomes, and exploring how patient preferences affect health outcomes. I apply advanced statistical methodology to optimize diagnostic and treatment decisions for individual patients.

My research has addressed a variety of topics, such as how to best target treatment to individual patients, evaluating the value of neurologic care, understanding how end-of-life preferences influence care, understanding how race disparities emerge after stroke, and evaluating population-level outcomes of varying treatment strategies.

Consulting and Related Relationships

At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
