Biography

I am currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, Professor of Internal Medicine, and Chief of Emergency Medical Services for The Ohio State University. After completing undergraduate studies with a BA in history at Dartmouth College, I attended medical school at the Pennsylvania State University. Then I completed a combined emergency medicine/internal medicine residency at Allegheny General Hospital, where I served as chief resident. I received my MPH in clinical and translational sciences at The Ohio State University.

Academics and research

I am vice chair of research for the Department of Emergency Medicine, where one focus of my research is the diagnosis and risk stratification of cancer patients who present to the emergency department (ED).

In particular, I am interested in identifying serious bacterial infection and risk stratification in cancer patients in the emergency department, and in developing scores and algorithms to improve decision-making about these patients. I am currently funded by the National Institute on Aging to improve diagnosis and risk stratification of older adults in the ED with suspected urinary tract infection using novel biomarkers and diagnostic algorithms. I am also site PI of a newly funded PCORI grant which will bring palliative care services to the ED setting.

I serve as co-chair of the National Cancer Institute-sponsored Comprehensive ONCOlogic Emergencies Research Network (CONCERN) and lead investigator on a 19-center observational study to describe the epidemiology of patients with active cancer presenting to the ED. I have co-authored many articles in well-respected publications, including Annals of Emergency Medicine, Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, Academic Emergency Medicine, and New England Journal of Medicine.

I have also shared my research in numerous presentations to organizations such as International Conference on Emergency Medicine, Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, and The Gerontological Society of America.

I currently am primary mentor for three NIA K23 and K76 training grants, am past chair of the SAEM Academy of Geriatric Emergency Medicine, and was an author on the original Geriatric ED guidelines which serve as the foundation for the creation of ACEP’s geriatric ED service program.
