Biography

I am Jesus Salas, DO, and I specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of acute and complex neurological conditions at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. These include stroke, seizures and epilepsy, meningitis, autoimmune neurological disorders and multiple sclerosis (MS). My practice focuses on neurohospital medicine, neuroimmunology and the care of hospitalized patients with serious neurological illnesses.

I chose a career in neurology because I am fascinated by the complexity of the nervous system and value the opportunity to help patients during some of the most challenging and uncertain moments of their lives. As a neurohospitalist, I evaluate and treat patients hospitalized with a wide range of acute neurological conditions including stroke, seizures and epilepsy, neurological infections and autoimmune disorders affecting the nervous system.

I believe patients should feel heard and informed and actively involved in their care. My approach combines a thorough neurological evaluation, clear communication and evidence-based treatment, to help patients and their families navigate complex medical situations with confidence. My advanced training in neuroimmunology allows me to provide specialized expertise in the inpatient management of MS and other autoimmune neurological disorders.

My clinical interests include stroke, seizures and status epilepticus, meningitis and encephalitis, neuroimmunology, MS, diabetic neuropathies, vertigo and disorders of the peripheral nervous system. I specialize in the inpatient management of autoimmune and inflammatory neurological conditions and have experience with therapies such as intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), plasma exchange and high-dose intravenous corticosteroids, used when appropriate. I also perform lumbar punctures and interpret complex neurological diagnostic testing including neuroimaging, cerebrospinal fluid studies and electroencephalography (EEG).

I am board-certified in neurology and completed my Neurology residency and Neuroimmunology and Multiple Sclerosis fellowship training at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

In addition to patient care, I am active in clinical research and scholarly work in neuroimmunology and neurohospital medicine, including presenting research and complex neurological cases at national conferences. I also served as chief resident in Neurology, with responsibilities in resident physician education, mentorship and clinical training.

Academics and research

I am Jesus Salas, DO, assistant professor in the Department of Neurology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and I specialize in neurohospital medicine, neuroimmunology and complex neurological disorders. My research focuses on clinical and scholarly projects that advance the understanding and treatment of neurological disease while improving care for hospitalized patients with neurological conditions.

My experience in academic medicine has shaped my career as both a clinician and educator. During my training at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, I developed a passion for teaching medical students and resident physicians while also caring for patients with complex neurological conditions. Teaching has reinforced the importance of using thoughtful clinical problem-solving, staying current with advances in neurology and communicating complex information clearly.

Mentorship has played an important role in my professional development and inspires me to provide the same guidance to future physicians. As an academic neurohospitalist, I enjoy integrating patient care, education and clinical research with the goal of improving neurological care and helping train the next generation of physicians.

As an assistant professor in the Division of Neurohospitalist and Teleneurology in the Ohio State College of Medicine, I educate and mento medical students and neurology and internal medicine resident physicians through bedside teaching, clinical supervision and didactic instruction. I also participate in clinical research and scholarly work focused on neuroimmunology, neurohospital medicine and complex neurological disorders.

I value opportunities to connect with diverse patient populations. Fluent in English and Spanish, I am committed to clear communication with patients and families and to fostering meaningful partnerships in care, education and research.
