Biography
I specialize in caring for patients with diverse gastroenterology diseases and performing complex endoscopic procedures. I regularly treat patients for Barrett’s esophagus, biliary obstruction, pancreatic cysts, GI strictures and GI-related masses and lesions.
I am especially passionate about this field because I have family experience with several gastroenterology-related diseases, and I have witnessed the toll that these issues can have on a person’s quality of life. My patients can trust that I will go the extra mile for them and always provide compassionate care.
The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is a state-of-the-art tertiary care center allowing for top treatment and research in diverse disease states. My own research interests include pancreatic cyst and achalasia management, and overall quality improvement.
I had excellent guidance in advanced endoscopy and management of complex GI diseases during my training, and I am honored to share my expertise with future physicians. I am involved with educating fellows in the GI program, especially on endoscopic methods.
When I’m not working, I love spending time with family and friends. I enjoy running, hiking, and attending concerts.

At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. Dr. Burlen was very informative. He paid close attention to my medical history and told me that I would be receiving tests and referrals as to help with the diagnosis. I liked him very much. He was easy to talk to.

In just a few minutes Dr. Burlen came Iin with the other Dr. And we reviewed my symptoms and checked with me frequently making certain we were on the same page and then he discussed with me the possible treatment plans were possible, describing them and telling me the advantages and possible risk factors for each. He answered my questions and encouraged me to ask them.. He then discussed his plans to start the process of what he would like me to do Includiing changes In one medication, testing that I would need and to see Dr. Perry who had seen and had surgery about seven years ago for the same Issue to see If he might have some additional Input for my current problems. He asked If O had Aiy questions, gave me a Summary sheet that outlined what we had discussed and the plan we had agreed to go forward.
Dr. Burlen sure is very thorough!! He did a wonderful job with my POEM surgery when I was in the hospital & knew everything when I had my f/u in the outpatient office. He answered all my questions & explained what test I will need in the up coming months so he can monitor my condition. I am very blessed to have him as my Dr.
I was denied coverage for a test Dr Burlen ordered during my EUS. He went above and beyond to get this denial reversed. He is excellent at what he does and how he cares for his patients
