Biography
I chose a career in medicine to have a positive and meaningful impact on others, and I love that my job affords me the opportunity to help improve quality of life for every person who comes to see me. As a dermatologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, I treat a wide variety of conditions ranging from acne to skin cancer. I have received numerous awards for my clinical care, and I was named to the Physician Care Connection Hall of Fame in 2023.
Serving in academic medicine is a special honor and privilege as it allows me to inspire and train the next generation of clinicians. I am a professor and the chair of the Department of Dermatology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Good every time. He knows my problems and changes meds/ tools when I one gets worst. He is looking into 2 different tools to help me. They both sound are working with others that use one or the other that work for them.
Good visit with doctor
He didn't listen when I told him I had been successfully treated in the past with step down prednisone and elocon cream. He instead prescribed a very expensive cream and told me I didn't need the step down steroids. The prescribed medicine did nothing but exacerbate my condition and my arms felt like they were on fire. I asked for the mometasone which is better but has done very little in healing the rash which continues to spread. I feel like I'm going to have to pay a medical bill for treatment that I did not receive. So I'm trying to heal myself with home remedies. Nothing so far is working. This should be basic care in dermatology.
Dr. Bechtel is always kind, thorough and professional. He has been our family dermatologist for many years. You couldn't find a more knowledgeable doctor, or a better human being anywhere.

Didn't seem interested in my concerns. Even though my history involves numerous precancerous spots & 2 previous chemical peels on my face, he only addressed the very specific places I pointed out. He did not examine my face or hands any further. I went to him as 1st available appt w/my regular doc is 12 months away. I will not return to him.
I thought I was going to have a test sample taken and stopped taking my CLL medicine 3 days before the appointment. However I believe Dr Bechtel didn't want to risk a bleeding incident and simply prescribed the treatment he would have prescribed assuming a positive test result.

The care provider spent very little time in the room with me and didn't really give me the opportunity to ask questions or bring up concerns. After the doctor left the room, I had to clarify with the nurse whether the doctor would be ordering a refill of my prescriptions, which was the main reason for my visit. The doctor didn't seem to even acknowledge that I had prescriptions to be refilled and didn't speak about the conditions related to those prescriptions at all. He basically just did a mole check and left the room.
Have been under the care of Dr. Mark Bechtel for many years- he's the best Dermatologist at OSU medical center by far. Knows my medical history very well - I have been a patient at OSU Dermatology for over 60 years-

Dr Bechtel is world class
I first visited Dr. Bechtel for a dermatologic issue approximately 35 years ago. He prescribed medication that cleared up the problem within weeks and his attention to my new issue was as thorough and efficient as it was 35 years ago. He even acknowledged that he and I had gone way back in our history together. Dr. Bechtel even noticed an issue with my skin that I had intended on asking him about but he brought it up before I could ask. This was secondary to the main reason for my visit and now we are taking care of the secondary issue, as well. A great doctor and, in my opinion, probably one of the best dermatologists in the country.

I couldn't ask for more. In two different situations, he has prescribed a change in treatment that was better than the original treatment prescribed by other providers. In the first circumstance, the new medication was topical and allowed me to discontinue an oral med. In the second, the original treatment wasn't working well and the one Dr. Bechtel prescribed has almost cured the problem in 6 says.
