About Me
I am a cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in treating congenital heart disease in children and adults. My leadership roles include serving as surgical director of the Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Cardiopulmonary Support programs at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
I have particular expertise in treating mitral valve disease in infants and small children, and in performing valve surgery. In addition, I specialize in the use of nonoperative therapies for chest wall deformities. Along with colleagues in the departments of Pulmonary Medicine and Otolaryngology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, I have also helped develop a multidisciplinary thoracic airway collaborative to treat patients with complex disorders of the airway within the chest. Patients are referred to me from across North and South America, and I’m passionate about doing all I can to make a positive difference in their lives.
My primary translational research is focused on the use of mechanical assist devices and associated therapies targeting heart recovery. My responsibilities also include helping to educate the next generation of physicians. I am an assistant clinical professor of Surgery in The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
As of 09/30/2024, Dr. McConnell has reported no relationships with companies or entities.
