Biography

I am Shannon Van Schaik, MSN, CNP, a board-certified family nurse practitioner (CNP) at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (the OSUCCC – James). I specialize in palliative care, symptom management, serious illness communication and cardiology. My practice focuses on helping people with serious illnesses achieve the best possible quality of life through compassionate, patient-centered care.

As a family nurse practitioner at the OSUCCC – James, I partner with patients and their loved ones to address the physical, emotional and practical challenges that can accompany serious illness. I help patients manage symptoms and navigate complex medical decisions, and I provide care that aligns with their goals, values and preferences.

My background in caring for patients with advanced cardiovascular disease and other complex, chronic conditions has strengthened my ability to manage challenging medical issues while emphasizing clear communication, shared decision-making and individualized care.

At the OSUCCC – James, I work closely with physicians, other nurses, social workers, chaplains, pharmacists and other members of the multidisciplinary care team to develop personalized care plans for patients.

In addition to my clinical practice, I enjoy mentoring nurse practitioner students, new advanced practice providers and interdisciplinary team members. I am committed to promoting evidence-based practice and contributing to education, quality improvement initiatives and research that advance the field of palliative care and improve patient outcomes.
