Biography
I am a board-certified neurologist and palliative care subspecialist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. I specialize in diagnosing and treating patients for various conditions including Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia, vascular dementia, memory disorders, and other disorders of the brain and nervous system.
I am committed to providing comprehensive and compassionate patient-centered care that addresses symptoms, underlying causes, and quality of life for both patients and caregivers. I collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to develop treatment plans that support neurological health and provide anticipatory guidance for navigating serious illnesses.
In addition to my clinical responsibilities, I am passionate about dementia research, finding innovative solutions to improve patient care, and educating the next generation of providers. I serve as an assistant professor in The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Academics and research
I specialize in health services research aimed at improving care for individuals with cognitive impairment, memory disorders and dementia.
My current work focuses on the acute care environment, specifically emergency departments and hospitals, where I investigate gaps in care that arise when cognitively impaired patients present with acute symptoms. This involves collecting primary data at the institutional level and conducting national-level secondary data analyses to identify clinical, pharmacological and systemic risk factors associated with poor outcomes, including accelerated physical and functional decline, elevated mortality and increased rates of institutionalization following discharge.
My goal is to pinpoint critical areas of vulnerability that can inform the design of targeted interventions and innovative care models. These efforts are driven by a commitment to preserving quality of life, physical function, autonomy and dignity for patients, throughout the course of their illness.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
As of 11/3/2025, Dr. Duarte has reported no relationships with companies or entities.
