Biography

While I treat all conditions involving the digestive system, I specialize in diseases that affect how the gut moves (motility disorders) and problems with the food pipe (esophagus). I enjoy talking to patients, understanding their perspective and working with them to create an individualized treatment plan. In addition to my work with patients, I enjoy conducting research because it ultimately helps improve what I do on the clinical side too.

At Ohio State, I love the camaraderie among my colleagues and the focus on patient-centered care. People here are very friendly and do their best to help, which makes it special to work here.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading (am a big fan of Asterix and Obelix), painting, watching science fiction movies, biking and gardening.

Highlights

  • Received one year of training in managing esophageal diseases at Mayo Clinic
  • Received two years of training focused on managing patients, where I helped conduct clinical trials on constipation and accidental bowel leakage
  • Identified a new blood-based biomarker for early identification of very sick patients with acute pancreatitis
  • Worked on identifying how to combat resistance to chemotherapy in pancreatic cancer cells during my PhD

Academics and research

I am a physician scientist with experience in clinical trials, and translational basic research. During my PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, I investigated the role of glycoproteins NGAL and MUC4 in pancreatic cancer pathogenesis, diagnosis and as therapeutic targets. I was funded by the US Dept. of Defense to work on the role of MUC4 mucin in the pathogenesis of breast cancer.

During my Gastroenterology training at the Mayo Clinic, I focused on functional GI disorders (e.g., constipation, gastroparesis) and on disorders of the esophagus (e.g., Barrett's esophagus, GERD). I was an NIH T32 Fellow at the Mayo Clinic and used the fellowship time to design and perform 2 therapeutic clinical trials in constipation and fecal incontinence.

I am interested to collaborate with oncologists, molecular biologists and others at The James Cancer Center to apply my skills towards prevention of GI cancers and management of functional GI disorders in these patients.
