Gorgas named president of American Board of Emergency Medicine Board of Directors
Diane Gorgas, MD, has been named the new president of the American Board of Emergency Medicine Board of Directors. The American Board of Emergency Medicine certifies emergency physicians who meet its educational, professional standing and examination standards. Gorgas is a professor and vice chair of academic affairs in the Department of Emergency Medicine at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and executive director of the Office of Global Health in the College of Medicine.
Ohio State included on first CMS list of top Rehabilitation Innovation Centers
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has named The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s Dodd Rehabilitation Hospital to the inaugural list of the Dr. Joanne Smith Memorial Rehabilitation Innovation Center designation. This designation honors 15 facilities that are national leaders in medical research, advanced treatment and rehabilitation innovation and known for handling complex medical conditions, conducting multidisciplinary research and playing a crucial role in training medical residents.
Taylor honored with Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics medallion award
Christopher Taylor, professor and director of medical dietetics in The Ohio State University College of Medicine’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, is one of eight registered dietitians nationwide to receive the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics 2024 national medallion award. The award honors members who have shown dedication to the profession of dietetics and other allied health fields. Taylor is one of 20 nationally recognized nutrition and public health experts working on updating the “Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025-2030.”
Kaeding appointed president of American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine
Christopher Kaeding, MD, has been appointed president of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). Kaeding is the Judson Wilson Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in The Ohio State University College of Medicine, executive director of Ohio State’s Sports Medicine Center and chief of the Division of Sports Medicine in the Department of Orthopaedics. AOSSM represents the interests of 4,200 orthopaedic surgeons and other professionals who care for athletes and active people.
Melnyk to receive American Academy of Nursing’s President’s Award.
The American Academy of Nursing has selected Bernadette Melnyk, PhD, to receive the President’s Award, the highest individual achievement awarded by the group. Melnyk is vice president for Health Promotion and Chief Wellness Officer at The Ohio State University, Helene Fuld Health Trust Professor of Evidence-based Practice in the College of Nursing and Professor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry in the College of Medicine. She will be honored during the academy’s upcoming Health Policy Conference.
Deschenes receives American Heart Association grant to study single ventricle disease
Isabelle Deschenes, PhD, professor and chair of physiology and cell biology in The Ohio State University College of Medicine, received a three-year $2.475 million grant from the American Heart Association as part of a new $13 million innovative research initiative focused on single ventricle disease. Deschenes is principal investigator of a project focusing on arrhythmias in people living with single ventricle disease. Scientists hope to better understand the electrical properties of the hearts of these patients and explore the potential of cardiac radiotherapy. This is a new treatment for improving heart failure and heart rhythm defects in single ventricle patients.
NIH grant supports training of Ohio State residents in Physician Scientist Development Program
The National Institutes of Health has awarded The Ohio State University College of Medicine its first R38 Stimulating Access to Research During Residency grant. The grant will support the training of eligible residents in the college’s Physician Scientist Development Program to do research in a variety of subspecialties, while connecting them to well-established postdoctoral research mentors and the physician-scientist community at Ohio State. The initiative is led by Ginny Bumgardner, MD, PhD, associate dean for Research Education and professor of Surgery, and Robert Baiocchi, MD, PhD, professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology.
Ohio State named to NRC Health Consumer Loyalty Best in Class Award list
The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has been named to the 2024 NRC Health Consumer Loyalty Best in Class Award list. The awards recognize health care organizations that consumers rate the highest on an equally weighted combination of Net Promoter Score, Brand Perception (overall image and reputation) and NRC Health’s Human Understanding Metric in the Market Insights survey. For the sixth year, Ohio State is among the 100 top scoring organizations in the ranking and is among the top 12 receiving Best in Class designation.
El Refaey receives $3.2 million grant to study cardiac arrhythmias
Mona El Refaey, PhD, assistant professor of Surgery in the Division of Cardiac Surgery at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, has received a $3.2 million grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. El Refaey will use the five-year grant to address cardiac arrhythmias in regard to a specific regulatory component of the protein phosphatase 2A, known as B56α. Her research will span from the cellular level to animals to uncover how B56α influences heart function.
Ohio State student recognized as Emerging Institute Scholar
The American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation has named Chioma Aneke, a third-year medical student in The Ohio State University College of Medicine, as a 2024 Emerging Leader Institute Scholar. The institute identifies and trains family medicine residents and medical students to build strong leadership skills.
