While you are in the Maternal Special Care unit, we encourage you to take advantage of our perinatal education offering. We provide a variety of helpful classes to help you prepare for labor and delivery as well as life once your baby is here.
Childbirth education
A quick overview of the childbirth process, including management of your labor in the hospital, pain management options, cesarean birth, newborn care and postpartum care
Self-care, safe sleep, and car seat safety
Learn about the special needs of patient and their families during the birth experience and throughout the stay. Instructions on the ABCs of safe sleep for baby and car seat laws. Talk about maternal mental health in coping with a hospital stay and normal emotions after delivery and ways to seek help if needed. Techniques in coping with stress are offered.
Infant CPR
Learn how to perform life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and how to save a choking infant.
Early intervention
Early Intervention is a statewide system that provides coordinated services to parents of young children with disabilities.
Neonatal Intensive Care
NICU staff will discuss care of the premature/term infant who needs NICU care. What to expect, tubes, lines etc., visiting process, code access to NICU, length of stay, how to get a tour of the area prior to delivery.
Reflect & relax
Maternity chaplain Amanda will offer a time of self-care exploration and centering activities (adult coloring books, jewelry making, relaxation techniques).
Virtual breastfeeding class
If you are interested in attending a class virtually, please email Courtney.Tedesco@osumc.edu for more information. You will need to download an app called BlueJeans onto your smartphone or bedside tablet in order to attend.
