Biography

I'm an MD PhD clinician scientist in neurology at The Ohio State University. I was awarded a NIH K08 grant funding my work to examine the inflammatory response after traumatic axonal injury under the mentorship of Dr. Segal. In the laboratory, my focus is on immunomodulation after traumatic neuronal injury to stimulate axon regeneration of neurons and improve recovery after optic nerve crush injury and traumatic brain or spinal cord injury. My focus is on the recruitment and enhancement of neuroprotective and regenerative myeloid cells after neuronal injury that can stimulate axon regeneration and recovery from trauma.

Academics and research

I completed my MD and PhD at the Medical University of South Carolina with a research focus in neuroimmunology. I completed my residency in neurology at the University of Michigan where I was chief resident in my final year. I then completed a clinical fellowship in sports neurology and traumatic brain injury at the University of Michigan, and see traumatic brain injury patients in the clinic. I returned to the laboratory during my fellowship with an NIH R25 grant, and continue research with my NIH K08 grant. The goal of my research is to find translational immunotherapy targets to promote healing after traumatic neuronal injury.

Research interests

  • Translational Immunotherapy
  • Traumatic Neuronal Injury
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Inflammation
  • Immune-Medicated Axon Regeneration
  • Concussion
  • Neuroimmunology

I have two fields of research focus, both lab-based. One is translational research focusing on developing immunotherapies to modulate the immune response after traumatic central nervous system injuries to promote axon regeneration and recovery. I have a laboratory in the Biomedical Research Tower dedicated to this work, have published journal papers and given invited presentations at national conferences on immune modulation after traumatic neuron injury.

In 2020, I published in Nature Immunology my research on a novel immune cell that stimulates axon regeneration after traumatic injury. This work was recognized by the scientific community with an accompanying editorial, and was featured in a number of neurological journals for its impact in the immunology field.

I also have expertise in treating concussion and its complications. In the clinic, I'm part of a research team that focuses on the pathophysiology of concussion and optimizing recovery for patients so that they can return to their lives prior to the injury. I have published multiple papers on concussion and given invited presentations at national conferences in the area of concussion pathophysiology and recovery.

I am funded by the NIH/NEI K08EY029362.

I regularly serve as a reviewer for peer-reviewed international journals, have led sessions on inflammation in the brain at research conferences, am a member of the American Academy of Neurology and the American Neurological Association and have served as an ad hoc reviewer for the U.S. Department of Defense grant committee.

I joined The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s Department of Neurology in 2019.

Consulting and Related Relationships

At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.

As of 11/3/2025, Dr. Sas has reported no relationships with companies or entities.
