Biography

I am a professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Director of Health Promotion and Healthcare Parity at the Nisonger Center. I specialize in advancing health equity for individuals with disabilities, particularly those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

My patients and colleagues can rely on me for compassionate, evidence-based care and advocacy that prioritizes inclusion, dignity, and access. I collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of experts to develop and implement programs that improve health outcomes and reduce disparities for people with disabilities.

In addition to my clinical and leadership responsibilities, I am deeply committed to education and research. I direct a federally funded rehabilitation research and training center focused on mental health in adults with intellectual disabilities and co-direct the Ohio Disability and Health Program, a statewide initiative supported by the CDC. I also lead efforts to integrate disability training into healthcare education to better prepare providers to deliver inclusive care.

Academics and research

I am a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, and Director of Health Promotion and Healthcare Parity at The Ohio State University Nisonger Center. My research focuses on health equity for people with disabilities, especially developmental disabilities. I have contributed to health surveillance, inclusive health promotion programs and policies, and healthcare provider education to improve the health and healthcare for children and adults with disabilities.

I direct a rehabilitation research and training center, funded by the National Institute on Disability Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research, focused on mental health of adults with intellectual disability. I also co-directs the Ohio Disability and Health Program, a state-wide capacity building program, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to improve the health and access to health care of Ohioans with disabilities. Believing that the solution to the problem of health disparities for people with disabilities lies in education, I am involved in several projects to promote disability training in healthcare education.

I served on the board of directors of the National Association on Dual Diagnosis and am past president of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, the largest interdisciplinary professional organization for intellectual and developmental disabilities, and of the Alliance for Disability in Health Care Education.
