‘There’s no safer place in the world’: Inside the surgical intensive care unit
Mother of motorcycle crash survivor finds unexpected hope and healing with veteran team of surgical ICU nurses.
The true essence of a Magnet organization stems from exemplary professional practice within nursing. This entails a comprehensive understanding of the role of nursing; the application of that role with patients, families, communities and the interdisciplinary team; and the application of new knowledge and evidence.
Nursing at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center embodies exemplary professional practice in every aspect of our care, whether through our care delivery system, culture of safety or scheduling and budgeting processes. Here are some examples of how:
In June 2023, as part of the Nursing Professional Practice Committee, a team focused on finding and evaluating evidence-based patient screening tools developed a new policy, “Patient Aggression and Violent Behavior, Screening for the Risk of Nursing” and an evidence-based assessment tool that launched in IHIS in December 2023. Named the Dynamic Appraisal of Situation Aggression (DASA), this assessment tool is a crucial step to evaluate risk for violent or aggressive behavior.
The Workplace Safety Committee has been working on updated signage outlining behaviors from patients and visitors we don’t tolerate. These signs will be placed in high-traffic areas across the health system, including at Harding Hospital, Rhodes Hall, Ross Heart Hospital, Dodd Rehabilitation Hospital, University Hospital, The James and East Hospital.
More than 50 signs will be installed, with plans to evaluate the possibility of placing additional signs in the future.
This award, given by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, honors units that have demonstrated a commitment to delivering quality and safety.
The DAISY Team Award annually honors collaboration by two or more people, led by a nurse, who identify and meet patient and/or patient family needs by going above and beyond the traditional role of nursing. Congratulations to the Hyperbaric Nurses for winning the Daisy Team Award for 2023.
Congratulations to the Comprehensive Stroke Center, which received top honors from the American Heart Association.
Preventing Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs), central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) and other infections is an important part of patient safety. And the number of days units go without a CLABSI or CAUTI is a helpful way we can quantify quality and patient safety across the medical center.
Congratulations to the following units that have gone 1,000+ or 365+ days without a CAUTI and/or a CLABSI as of Aug. 10, 2023. Special shoutout to East Tower 7 and Rhodes 7 West, which have each gone 1,000+ days without a CAUTI and a CLABSI.
Patient care has increased in complexity, with shorter lengths of stay, higher acuity levels and proliferation of technology, not to mention the pandemic! These nurses have demonstrated their clinical expertise at the bedside in critical thinking, ability to access and apply evidence and the ability to educate patients and colleagues.
Congratulations to these teams for being in the top tier for their quality and safety performance during fiscal year 2023! Teams were rewarded and recognized for their collective efforts in improving (or maintaining) quality outcomes for patients. The team includes providers, nursing staff, PCAs, UCAs, EVS team members, physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy and other groups.
Most of the inpatient areas were assessed on falls, falls with injury, CLABSI, CAUTI, pressure injuries and C-diff.
