Biography
My patient care philosophy is focused on providing high quality, evidence-based care. This requires taking time to understand each patient’s unique situation, challenges and goals.
My specialty is orthopedic surgery, with a primary focus in hip preservation. I treat all types of hip conditions. My surgical expertise includes hip arthroscopy and hip osteotomies.
The most satisfying aspect of my job is meeting a patient who needs help, creating a personalized treatment plan and following through until full recovery is achieved. It’s incredibly rewarding to see our patients regain the ability to enjoy an active lifestyle.
I enjoy working at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center because it offers a warm, collegial environment, with continuous efforts to improve the quality of the care we provide and genuine compassion for those who need help.

Dr. Ryan listened and clearly explained the changes in my X-ray from 6 years ago. He explained my options and referred me for PT and a consult with Dr. Greco.
My provider understood and communicated clearly the choices available to me in treating my injured hip. Appreciated his manner in connecting with me personally
He explained things in a way that was level with my understanding. When I explained that I had a medical background he immediately changed his language to less of a layman's term approach while still making sure I completely understood. I felt validated in my knowledge and still learned more about my condition than I was previously aware. He acknowledged my intelligence while still answering questions about scans without making me feel like I was out of line for asking. I left with less fear about the next steps necessary even though I was bummed that an arthroscopic procedure would not be enough in my case.

Dr. Ryan was exceptional from the start. He was always so kind and humble, and took his time explaining the details and pros/cons about the procedure. We of course discussed what to expect if we pursued the labrum repair and bone shaping procedure with him, but was also direct and honest with my candidacy for a full hip replacement with a different surgeon. There was never any pressure or overly optimistic expectations set, but rather he provided the information to make the best decision for me. As far as the procedure, my healing time was much shorter than expected. Watching videos of what to expect from patients who had the procedure themselves, I feel like my pain and recovery was significantly better. Although he made it clear that I would eventually need a hip replacement, I no longer notice any pain in my hip during my day to day life and feel like we succeeded in delaying that necessity. My colleague recommended Dr. Ryan from her experiences as both his acquaintance and as a patient herself. Every aspect of my experience exceeded my expectations. I would not hesitate to recommend him strongly to any family or friends seeking a similar procedure.

The appointment felt rather pointless to me in the end. I was referred to Dr. Ryan because Sports Medicine thought I needed to see a specialist for my hip impingement. The only thing Dr. Ryan did was update a prescription for me and prescribe physical therapy. That's something I could have received, for this condition, from Sports Medicine or my PCP. I expected a referral to an orthopedic surgeon to involve something more than "Here do these basic things and let's see you again in three months." Even though physical therapy is something difficult for me to schedule because I need to see someone who specializes in hypermobility and it aggravates other conditions I have.

The best doctor EVER. Always prepared for every visit. For several years many doctors dismissed my condition as non-existent. I had had all sorts of tests and even had my DEFIBRILLATOR removed for MRIs and STILL no answers! Dr. Ryan, in conjunction with Dr. McCamey, found the problem with x-rays after my first visit with each of them! It's an extremely severe and painful congenital malformation. Dr. Ryan has had to operate once and may have to again in the future. He found the problem immediately and prevents irreparable damage. I can still walk because of him. He Is absolutely my very favorite doctor and I trust him with not just my life, but also my quality of life!

Dr. John Ryan is my absolute favorite doctor. He always listens to my concerns, gives me the best care and talks to me in ways that I completely understand. I just wish he was a general doctor for all of my needs. He's amazing.
I called ahead to schedule and appointment and they told me he doesnt do hip replacements or works on hips no more but he was the doctor I had always seen after my two hip replacements and so I am having problems and wanted to see him about them. The nurse went to check if he would still see me knowing all of this and I guess he reviewed my chart and told her to have me come on in and so I did and he barely talked to me, didn't even examine me or was concerned about the problems I was having and told me he would have to refer me to another hip specialist and slammed the door when he left the room. I took off work, drove 45 minutes to get to this appointment all for nothing and he was being a total jerk about it and could have cared less, didn't listen to me at all and waisted my time and just filled his pockets more by having me come all the way down there for nothing! I will never come back to this doctor or ever refer him to anybody and I wouldn't have said that before!
I hadn't seen Dr. Ryan, In 7+ years since he discharged me from his care after a prior surgery. I had really liked him before & was worried maybe I had hyped him up too much in my head. But no, he lived up to my memory of being a doctor who listens to you & explains things in easy to digest ways. HE treats you like you can understand him like doesn't talk down to you while explaining things. He's a top notch doctor.
It is always good to see Dr. Ryan. We discussed (one more time), the procedure that I need, and he went over all concerns and issues with me.

He had not looked at the MRI images before the appointment and declined to view them during the appointment when I offered them. And overall he seemed entirely disinterested in my situation or my pain.
I was so grateful for the time Dr. Ryan spent with me, carefully going over my imaging, giving detailed information about conservative measures, data re outcomes, etc. It was exactly what I needed and was searching for to be able to make an informed decision. He is clearly an expert and has a warm and caring manner. I'm very grateful.

Generally good, but I really wanted more academic/empirical evidence used to justify some of his guidance (not that I mistrust the guidance, but because I want to better understand to better implement it), and that didn't seem forthcoming. He wasn't mean or rude or anything about it, but when I was trying to get the relevant evidence/studies/literature it seemed like I was talking past him. I do realize this is a non-standard request.
