Biography

As the director of the Division of Vascular Diseases and Surgery at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, I treat patients with various conditions impacting their blood vessels. I specialize in performing minimally invasive procedures and open surgeries using the most advanced techniques to improve patient outcomes. I commonly address conditions such as aortic aneurysm, renal artery obstruction, mesenteric vascular occlusion, and peripheral artery and carotid artery diseases. My role also involves serving as medical director of the Vascular Laboratory.

I have spent my career customizing treatment strategies to best align with each patient’s personal goals and values. This philosophy is at the core of my clinical practice. When a patient is informed about all their options and has a chance to share their perspective, we are better equipped to develop a plan that is consistent with both the benefits they seek to gain and the harms they hope to avoid.

As a vascular surgeon, I focus on a long-term perspective when considering which care plan may work best for each patient. I offer the full spectrum of treatment options including medication, exercise therapy, surgical procedures and endovascular procedures like angioplasty and stenting. Decisions are based on medical evidence and the patient’s preferences.

Academics and research

This style deeply influences my research, which is focused on developing more patient-centered approaches for the treatment of vascular disease. As a surgeon- scientist, my clinical practice provides me with opportunities to improve patient care. I develop innovative solutions in the laboratory and then use them in the clinic to give my patients the best, most advanced care available. This process energizes me and is the primary reason I love my job.

The other is my dedication to educating the next generation of vascular surgeons, a passion that was inspired by my own amazing teachers and mentors. I value academic medicine because the teaching and research opportunities amplify the effect we can have on patient care on a wider scale. I am proud to do my part as a professor of surgery in The Ohio State University College of Medicine and as director of the Vascular Surgery Fellowship program.

In addition to my clinical and scholarly responsibilities, I am also a standing member on the United States Food & Drug Administration Medical Devices Advisory Committee. I have been honored to receive multiple awards for my work from organizations including the American Heart Association, the Southern Association for Vascular Surgery, the Society for Vascular Surgery and the Foundation for Vascular Cures.
