The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center East Hospital blends academic medicine with a community-based setting in a comprehensive outpatient facility (543 Taylor Ave.) and 190-bed hospital (181 Taylor Ave.) on Columbus’ East Side.
Home to a Level III Trauma Center, East Hospital provides a full range of medical and surgical services to patients throughout central Ohio, including orthopedics, general surgery, vascular surgery, plastic surgery, ENT, cardiovascular and pulmonary care, family medicine, general internal medicine and emergency medicine. Additionally, patients at East Hospital have access to central Ohio’s leading alcohol and drug addiction recovery services, a comprehensive wound-healing center with limb preservation program, digestive disease treatment, a full-range of diagnostic services, a sleep disorders center, and outpatient oncology services.
Surgical patients benefit from the latest advances in robotic technology for hip and knee replacement, hernia repair and other general surgical procedures.
East Hospital has earned “2017 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence” from HealthGrades, a Leapfrog “A” grade for patient safety, and Primary Stroke Center certification from the Joint Commission. East Hospital offers classes about managing diabetes to referred patients. The 1 1/2-hour Diabetes Discharge class must be scheduled within 30 days of inpatient discharge. A longer, more comprehensive two-part, three-hour class is also offered once/month. In addition, patients may schedule individual follow-up appointments.

To visit an emergency patient, you must have the permission of the physician and nurse caring for the patient. Children age 12 or younger must have permission of the charge nurse.

Our experts in gastroenterology and hepatology work together to diagnose, prevent and treat digestive health issues. We treat a wide array of disorders ranging from heartburn and indigestion to Celiac disease. Services offered at this location include evaluation for surgical options for the treatment of diseases and disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. This includes gastroesophageal reflux disease and gall bladder disease, general surgery related disorders such as inguinal, paraesophagela and incisional hernia repair, and benign diseases and disorders of the colon and rectum. Our Sleep Medicine experts literally work around the clock to help people with sleep problems. In addition to affecting everyday functioning, sleep issues can lead to high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes or other health concerns. Patients who are diagnosed with a sleep disorder may be referred here for diagnostic evaluation or other treatment. Services offered include:
- Treatment for all types of sleep disorders
- Individualized care at our state-of-the-art sleep center
- Portable Sleep Study option for patients uneasy about coming to the sleep lab, allowing early diagnostic testing to be done at home

The staff of Ohio State's Comprehensive Wound Center is committed to identifying the cause of your non-healing wound and developing a treatment plan that is specifically personalized for you. We are a national leader in wound research and offer the most advanced treatment options available including skin substitutes, negative pressure therapy, hyperbaric and topical oxygen and growth factor therapy. We treat many types of wounds, including but not limited to the following:
- Diabetic ulcers

The Comprehensive Wound Center also houses Ohio State’s Limb Preservation Program, combining wound healing expertise and the most advanced techniques to avoid amputation and save limbs. Recommended Parking
All parking at East Hospital is free. Long-term public parking is available directly across Hawthorne Avenue in the surface lots.
For Emergency Department patients, short-term parking is available just outside the Emergency Department entrance doors. The entrance to our Emergency Department is on the south end of the hospital, on the Hawthorne Avenue side.
The Comprehensive Wound Center is on the west side of the building, near the Emergency Department. Parking is on the west side.

Visiting a Patient
For the comfort of our patients, only two visitors are permitted at any one time. Talk with the charge nurse in your unit if you would like to have additional visitors. All visitors must be free of illness. In areas where overnight visitors are allowed, visitors must wear an identification badge at all times. Patient visitation is not restricted on the basis of age, ethnicity, religion, culture, language, physical or mental disability, socioeconomic status, sex, sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.
Visitation is 24 hours a day in most areas of the hospital, but please check with the staff in the patient care unit to confirm the policy for that area. From 9 p.m.-5 a.m., patients are limited to one visitor. Intensive Care Unit hours vary, so please check with unit staff.
Children are able to visit when accompanied and properly supervised by a non-patient adult at all times. The child is considered one of the two patient visitors. Children may visit the Intensive Care Unit patients by checking with staff first.
Please remember that smoking and the use of tobacco products are not permitted inside or outside of any of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center buildings.
Please turn off your cell phones or any radio transmitted devices while in the hospital.
Sending Something to a Patient
Fresh flowers, plants, and food are not allowed in the intensive care unit, as these items can be a source of infection. Cards, balloons and silk flowers are encouraged and can be displayed for the patient to see.
