What is sarcoidosis?

Sarcoidosis causes inflammation, usually in your lungs, skin or lymph nodes. Starting as tiny, grain-like lumps called granulomas, sarcoidosis can affect any organ in your body.

What causes sarcoidosis?

No one knows what causes sarcoidosis. The condition affects men and women of all ages and races, but it occurs mostly in people 20 to 50 years old. African Americans (especially women) and people of northern European descent also are more likely to develop the disease.

What are the symptoms of sarcoidosis?

Symptoms may include coughing, fatigue, weight loss, night sweats and shortness of breath. Many people, however, don’t develop any symptoms.

How does Ohio State diagnose sarcoidosis?

Your doctor may use chest X-rays, lung function tests and a biopsy.

How does Ohio State treat sarcoidosis?

Prednisone, a type of steroid, is the main treatment, though not everyone with the disease needs treatment.
