As a fellow at the Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology Center at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, you’ll train under some of the nation’s top clinicians, educators and researchers at one of the nation’s leading academic health care centers.

At our MS Center, you’ll study and manage a broad patient base from across the state and nation with all phenotypes of MS and related disorders that can be confused with MS and other central nervous system (CNS) neuroinflammatory conditions, including, but not exclusive to, neuromyelitis optica (NMO), Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD), neurosarcoidosis, rheumatological disorders that affect the nervous system, autoimmune/paraneoplastic encephalitis and CNS vasculitis.

Welcome to the MS Fellowship Program at Ohio State

Gyang_Tirisham_460x460It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the MS division of the Ohio State University, Wexner medical center. Thank you for your interest in our MS/neuroimmunology fellowship; we are excited that you have taken the time to learn about our unique and diverse training opportunities.

The main goal of our program is to prepare trainees to develop competence and independence in clinical management and clinical research in MS and neuroimmunology. We offer 2 tracks of training: a one-year clinical track and a two-year clinical research track. Supervision and mentorship are provided by 6 fellowship trained faculty with diverse clinical and research interests.

Our program provides a variety of unique clinical exposures including innovative multi-disciplinary clinics, inpatient consultations service, pediatric neuroimmunology experience at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and collaboration with other disciplines for elective rotations. Clinical trials and clinical research trainings are also incorporated into training.

I invite you to explore our website and to review our curriculum and syllabus. We look forward to hearing from you and learning about your goals and interests.

Sincerely,
Tirisham Gyang, MD

Program basics

As a destination center for patients with MS and related diseases from well beyond central Ohio, our Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology Center leverages the latest diagnostic tools and cutting-edge therapeutics while simultaneously expanding our knowledge through research and education.

Care is coordinated among a multidisciplinary team with specialized MS and neuroimmunology knowledge and experience. The latest diagnostic tools – including MRI, optical coherence tomography, evoked potential tests and rapid onsite laboratory analysis of blood and spinal fluids – inform our personalized care plans. We also offer comfortable, in-house infusion suites for convenient administration of intravenous therapies.

We offer two training paths: a one-year clinical track and a two-year clinical research track.

Our program operates within the Ohio State Neurological Institute, which was among the first in the country to combine five neuroscience-related specialties – Neurology, Neuroscience, Neurosurgery, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Psychiatry and Behavioral Health – into a single, integrated program. Our own Department of Neurology is distinguished for our clinical, research and teaching resources by the American Academy of Neurology and the American Neurological Association.

Our fellows learn alongside six MS-fellowship-trained clinical faculty with diverse clinical and research interests, and two collaborating pediatric neuroimmunologists from nearby Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Among our program’s unique features are:

  • Exposure to diverse clinical presentations in both outpatient and inpatient settings with adult and pediatric populations.
  • Experience working in targeted and customized multi-disciplinary clinics
  • Direct participation in clinical trials and clinical research training
  • Collaboration with other disciplines for customized elective exposure in urology, ophthalmology, spasticity management, physical medicine and rehabilitation and other specialties

Education goals

Our goal is for each trainee to become an expert in the evaluation and diagnosis of all clinical subtypes of MS and related disorders, while also learning how to monitor disease progression and identify transitions between relapsing and secondary progressive disease.

You’ll be exposed to a broad range of effective disease-modifying therapies, both FDA-approved and those under current investigation, along with their clinical indications, intended outcomes and potential side effects. For more effective symptomatic management of MS in a remarkably diverse patient population, you’ll collaborate with subspecialists across the medical center, which will familiarize you with the latest available treatments for fatigue, depression, bladder and bowel dysfunction, sexual dysfunction, spasticity, pain, cognitive deficits and more.

To enhance your research skills, we’ll emphasize clinical trial design, budget negotiation, randomization, regulatory processes, safety monitoring procedures, standard outcome measures and scoring tools.

Curriculum

We offer a well-rounded curriculum to help you become an MS expert with strong clinical, research and leadership skills.
