A leader in innovative treatments for mood disorders and other mental health conditions.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is one of the interventional psychiatry treatments we have available at Harding Hospital and other locations throughout The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

It’s a treatment for severe depression and other mental health conditions. During the procedure, a mild electrical current is passed through a person’s brain to trigger a seizure. This action seems to change the brain’s chemistry or reset the brain, causing relief of symptoms.

This form of treatment has a long history in mental health; however, it’s much safer, more controlled and less painful now. We provide it in a specially designed suite where you’ll undergo general anesthesia, so you won’t feel or remember the procedure. Providing novel therapies, like ECT, is just one reason we’re a leader in treating mental and behavioral health disorders.

Patient pick-up and drop-off is located on the east side of the building on 1670 Upham Drive between Ohio State Harding Hospital and Dorothy M. Davis Heart & Lung Research Institute.
