Congratulations to Jim Battista, one of the unit clerical associates serving the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) on 4 Doan, for being nominated and selected as one of this quarter's BUCK-I Award winners!

The Bringing the Utmost Care and Kindness to Individual patients (BUCK-I) Award recognizes Health System ancillary nursing staff (non-RNs who report to a nurse manager) for extraordinary acts of compassionate care they demonstrate in their work with patients. Winners of this award are known for exemplifying the mission, vision and values of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and truly making a connection with the patient and family through trust and emotional support, often going above and beyond the call of duty.

"Jim has worked at OSUWMC for 38 years, and in that time has made a tremendous impact on our work atmosphere and unit morale. Jim works as a UCA in the SICU, a unit that can be very high stress for all staff as we care for profoundly critically ill patients and their families. Jim works as a communication liaison with not only the staff of the SICU, but also the families, lab, testing and procedural areas, and basically anyone who is trying to communicate with someone in the SICU. He is the frontline of communication and is excellent at helping to coordinate communication; field and problem solve a variety of issues, and help diffuse hostile situations. He can anticipate the needs of the unit, and without being asked, he will volunteer to handle the issue at hand, so the doctors, nurses, and Patient Care Associates (PCA) can focus on the patients. Jim is kind, genuine, and helpful, always mindfully tactful when addressing any situation. Jim makes a point to ask each person how they are doing. He offers kind words and encouragement when someone is having a bad day. He often senses the mood of a person, and without prying, will ask if they are ok, listen, and acknowledge their feelings with a sincerity that is greatly appreciated. He makes a habit of doing everything in his power to make something, anything he can easier for every person he encounters in the SICU." -Kendra Stephens, staff nurse, UH SICU
