Congratulations to Leighann Shanklin, one of the patient care associates serving the Neurocritical Care Unit on the 10th floor of the Critical Care Tower, for being nominated and selected as one of this quarter's BUCK-I Award winners!

The Bringing the Utmost Care and Kindness to Individual patients (BUCK-I) Award recognizes Health System ancillary nursing staff (non-RNs who report to a nurse manager) for extraordinary acts of compassionate care they demonstrate in their work with patients. Winners of this award are known for exemplifying the mission, vision and values of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and truly making a connection with the patient and family through trust and emotional support, often going above and beyond the call of duty.

"Leighann Shanklin is a new PCA who is still in orientation. She has already showed extraordinary caring behavior for our patients and their families. We had a very tragic situation that she helped turn into a legacy lasting memory for a family. Our unit had a patient who was not going to survive their stroke. The patient had a daughter who was going to get married in the next month and was very upset that her father would not be able to attend her wedding. The team helped the family arrange to have the wedding at bedside so that her father could attend the wedding. Leighann went to the gift shop and asked for any donations for the wedding. She came back with some fake flower decorations and heart balloons from the gift shop. She then went to the volunteer department and got paper to make paper flowers so that the bride would have some flowers for her wedding. She then called patient experience and collaborated with them to get the family a celebration cake. All of her hard work helped get this family a celebration that they would not have been able to have without her generosity and caring behaviors. Leighann went above and beyond to help this family and is truly already impacting the connection between staff and patient family." -Jessica Mahle, Assistant Nurse Manager, 10 CCT Neuro ICU
