Pulmonary medicine focuses on lung health and includes asthma treatment. We offer specialized asthma programs for athletes, refractory (severe) asthma and women. Diagnostic tests we offer include:

• Spirometry lung function assessment
• Eucapnic voluntary hyperventilation (EVH) – a rapid-breath test for exercise-induced asthma
• Exhaled nitric oxide measurements – a noninvasive way to assess lung inflammation
• Chest X-ray/Chest computed tomography (CT) scans
• Blood tests to measure carbon dioxide, oxygen and allergy responses
• Allergy skin testing – to identify environmental agents that trigger asthma

Patients who are scheduled for a major heart, vascular, orthopedic or spine surgery; thoracic, intra-abdominal or craniotomy procedure or any other procedure with anticipated major fluid or blood shifts may be seen here.

A nurse will collect information about your health, fitness, previous operations, allergies and more in order to individualize your care to your specific needs. It helps prepare the surgeon, the anesthesiologist and you by identifying any potential anesthetic, surgical or post-operative complications. You may also undergo an electrocardiogram (ECG), blood or urine tests or other tests. The assessment length varies depending on the type of operation that you are having.

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary program that helps improve the well-being of people who have pulmonary disease. Pulmonary rehabilitation may benefit people who have COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), sarcoidosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis or cystic fibrosis, and those who are preparing or and have undergone lung volume reduction surgery, lung transplant and other lung surgeries. Pulmonary rehabilitation may include:

• Exercise training
• Nutritional counseling
• Education on your lung disease or condition and how to manage it
• Energy-conserving techniques
• Breathing strategies
• Behavior/psychological counseling and/or group support

The Pulmonary rehabilitation team may include doctors, nurses, exercise specialists, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, and dietitians.

The Pulmonary Diagnostic Lab provides complete pulmonary function testing, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, six-minute walks, oxygen titrations, obtain arterial blood gasses for analysis, high altitude studies, shunt studies, and exercise-induced asthma evaluation with the eucapnic hyperventilation technique.

Our Sleep Medicine experts literally work around the clock to help people with sleep problems. In addition to affecting everyday functioning, sleep issues can lead to high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes or other health concerns. A variety of sleep problems are treated here, including:
