• Brain Bank & Biorepository

  The goal of the Neurology Research Institute Brain Bank & Biorepository (NRI-BBB) is to establish a state of the art bank and biorepository at The Ohio State University to facilitate novel research and clinical trials using samples collected by clinicians directly involved in patient care. While not therapeutic in scope, the biorepository serves as a centralized site through which researchers can utilize clinical samples and data stored within the biorepository for their own specific research endeavors. Samples to be stored and maintained within the NRI-BBB includes, but is not limited to CSF, blood, autopsy and surgical and/or biopsy specimens.

• Our Team

  Jonathan Roell, MBBS

  Jonathan Roell joined the Neuroscience Research Institute at The Ohio State University in September of 2021 as a Research Associate and currently handles the processing, storage and maintenance of samples submitted to the NRI-Brank Bank and Biorepository. He received his B.S. from the University of Florida in Engineering Sciences before working at the CDC investigating foamy virus as a potential vaccine vector. He then spent six years in Beijing where he received his MBBS from China’s Capital Medical University. Jonathan’s most recent position prior to joining OSU was as a molecular technologist at OSF St. Francis Medical Center where his team was tasked with developing large scale COVID-19 testing at the onset of the pandemic. As a member of the NRI-BBB team, Jonathan plays an integral role in expanding the NRI-Brain Bank and Biorepository which supports translational research across OSU’s College of Medicine.

  
  

  

  Michael Rose, BS MB(ASCP)CM

  Michael Rose joined the Neuroscience Research Institute in September 2021 beginning his role as Laboratory Supervisor for the NRI-BBB. Michael received his Bachelors of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology from Kent State University. After graduating, Michael spent 9 years at Nationwide Children’s Hospital where he was a lead team member for their own biorepository. He then later transitioned to a role on the clinical genetics team where he tested for a variety of genetic inherited diseases and cancer. During this time Michael also received his certification in Molecular Biology from American Society for Clinical Pathology. Michael later joined the next generation sequencing team in the Institute for Genomic Medicine at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. In this role, he performed a variety of library constructions for sequencing, loaded and maintained the sequencers, and investigated NGS findings. Michael is passionate about improving processes for the better of the laboratory and building relationships across work groups. Michael is looking forward to continuing to grow here at Ohio State while bringing his own experience and skill sets to the NRI.

  
  

• Center for Neurobiology of Aging and Resiliency

  The Center for Neurobiology of Aging and Resiliency (CNAR) is a translational research center within the Neurological Research Institute that’s focused on understanding and optimizing aging of the nervous system. The risk for developing neurological disorders increases with age, and many geriatric syndromes are largely explained by neurological dysfunction. Because the global population is aging rapidly, optimizing neurologic health in older adults is imperative. CNAR aims to translate research discoveries to improve healthspan and function in older adults using multidisciplinary and integrative approaches. We focus on three main areas:

  1. healthy aging and resiliency
  2. age-related neurodegeneration
  3. aging with a neurological disorder

• Annual Retreat

  Join Us for the Neuroscience Research Institute Annual Retreat

  Registration for the 2022 NRI Annual Retreat on Nov. 4 at the Fawcett Center is now open. The goal of the retreat is to highlight advances in neuroscience research across Ohio State and to foster internal collaborations. Agenda details, including announcement of the keynote speaker, will be forthcoming.

  This year’s program will also include two poster sessions (including a category for undergraduates), plenary sessions, flash talks (chosen from abstracts) and lunchtime breakout sessions. The reception will be at the end of the day, approximately 5-6 p.m.

  There’s no fee to attend but you must register.

2023 NRI Neuroimmunology Symposium

• 2023 NRI Neuroimmunology Symposium Peripheral neuroimmune interactions in health and disease

  Join us for the 2023 NRI Neuroimmunology Symposium - Peripheral Neuroimmune Interactions in Health and Disease. This event will be held from 8:00am - 6:30pm on Friday, June 23 at the Blackwell Inn & Pfahl Conference Center. This will be a 1-day event and sessions will include topics about neuronal control of barrier immunity; bi-directional cross-talk between the enteric nervous system and immune systems; and cancer, immunosurveillance & neuropathy. Confirmed external speakers include Ulrich von Andrian (MIT & Harvard University, Plenary Speaker), Isaac Chiu (Harvard University), Sebastian Talbot (Queen’s University), and Grace Shin (Columbia University).

  We are excited to host this symposium and bring researchers across the country together to share cutting-edge approaches and recent developments within the field of neuroimmunology as well as to highlight neuroimmunology research at Ohio State.

• NRI Neuroimaging Symposium is October 28-29, 2022

  We invite you to attend the 2022 NRI Neuroimaging Symposium on October 28 – 29, 2022. This year’s event will be held at the Blackwell Inn and Pfahl Conference Center (2110 Tuttle Park Place, Columbus, OH 43210).

  Topics highlighted during the event will include neuroimaging and artificial intelligence in neurodegeneration and vascular diseases as well as ocular imaging in neurological diagnosis and management. Click here to view the full agenda for the symposium.
