Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center is a nationally ranked and accredited facility that provides inpatient and outpatient rehabilitative care. We provide coordinated care throughout each phase of your rehabilitation. We ensure that all of your health care needs are addressed over time. We offer you ongoing care whether you are a patient in our hospital, have been admitted to Dodd Rehabilitation Hospital, our inpatient rehabilitation services facility or if you begin rehabilitation in any of our outpatient facilities. Inpatient Admissions
If you or a family member is interested in being admitted to Dodd Rehabilitation Services, you or the physician currently overseeing your care may contact Dodd Rehabilitation Services Admissions Office at 614-293-3824. If you are currently a patient at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, please note that Dodd Rehabilitation Services is a separate admission process.
The Dodd Rehabilitation Services admissions team will review the consult/referral form and evaluate your medical, clinical and psychosocial status, as well as your current insurance benefits, to ensure you meet the requirements for successful rehabilitation.
You may be considered a candidate for admission if:
- You have had an illness, injury or recurrence of a disease process
- You are medically stable and have a determined course of treatment
- You require 24-hour skilled rehabilitation nursing care and daily Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physician management of your complex medical and functional needs
- You would benefit from admission to a comprehensive medical rehabilitation program offering immediate access to life support services, consulting specialists or diagnostic testing
- You are able to actively participate in an intense level of rehabilitation services, ordinarily consisting of at least two of the following services: physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology, and/or orthotic/prosthetic services, three or more hours per day, five days a week
- Your length of stay is based on your functional and medical goals. Length of stay may vary depending on each individual's rehabilitation program.
- You demonstrate the potential for significant practical improvement in function as the result of participation in intensive therapies in the following areas:
- Mobility
- Self-care
- Activities of daily living
- Independent living skills
- Bowel and bladder management
- Swallowing
- Communication
- Cognition
- Behavior
- Adjustment to disability
- You demonstrate the potential for discharge into the community after rehabilitation
In addition, your family or support system is willing to:
- Participate in the inpatient rehabilitation treatment plan of care
- Agree to abide by the policies and procedures of Dodd Rehabilitation Services and Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center
- Be involved in goal-setting, ongoing treatment, modification of the treatment plan and follow-up care at all levels

Personal Items and Clothing
Dressing is an important skill in rehabilitation. You need to wear casual clothes that are lightweight and comfortable, such as sports clothing. Please write your name on all clothing (inside tags) with a permanent marker.
Checklist of Suggested Personal Items:
- Slacks, sweatpants or jeans (4-5 changes)
- Blouses/shirts (4-5 changes)
- Night wear (4-5 changes)
- Undergarments (4-5 changes)
- Shoes with non-skid soles
- Jacket, sweater or coat
- Special equipment (currently used)
- Medication (currently taken)
Please avoid bringing valuable items and money to reduce security risks.
Laundry
Each nursing unit has a washer and dryer that can be used free of charge.
Security
All patients at Dodd Rehabilitation Services are asked to sign in and sign out when leaving and returning to the unit. Nursing staff may use an electronic security system for patients at risk of wandering. Remote surveillance cameras are located at the front and rear entrances of the building and the Ernest W. Johnson Park. Doors are locked after visiting hours by security staff. For the safety of our patients, any visitor creating a disturbance or violating Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center policy will be escorted from the building.
How to Handle a Complaint or Ethical Violation
Treating patients with respect, dignity and compassion, while providing quality care, are mainstays of the Dodd Hall Rehabilitation Services tradition. Your satisfaction is important to us. If you have any concerns or complaints while at Dodd Rehabilitation Services, we ask that you please follow the steps listed below so we can respond promptly and appropriately:
Step 1
- For concerns relating to nursing care, talk to the Charge Nurse on your unit
- For concerns relating to therapy services, talk to the Primary Therapist on your team
- You will receive a response within eight hours
Step 2
If the issue is not resolved to your satisfaction:
- Talk to the Nurse Manager on your unit for nursing concerns
- Talk to the Rehabilitation Services Manager on your service for therapy concerns
- You will receive a verbal response to your concerns with 24 hours
Step 3
If further assistance or clarification is needed:

- A written and verbal response will be provided within 48 hours

Guardianship and Advocacy
The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Department of Social Work assists patients and families who have special need for protective services, such as guardianship, patient advocacy, legal services, conservatorship and child or adult protective services. Social workers and case managers link patients to community resources, disability awareness activities and support groups.
Additionally, when there is an unresolved concern about patient abuse, neglect or a patient’s property in the facility, the Department of Social Work can provide information regarding the patient's rights to file a complaint with state survey and certification agencies.

The ADA was established by Congress to ensure that individuals with disabilities are treated without discrimination. Issues addressed include public housing and barriers to accessibility. The social worker assigned to your team can provide specific information about your rights under the law.

Outpatient Referral Information
The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center provides several convenient locations that offer outpatient rehabilitation care. If you or a family member is interested in receiving our nationally recognized outpatient rehabilitation services, you will need to have a physician referral or prescription.
