- Lead Physician: Stroke and Sleep Clinic
A critical mission of the Neurology department at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center is to provide highly skilled diagnostic services and personalized, comprehensive care for neurological disorders, at a level of expertise typically only available at academic tertiary medical centers. The following list of clinics were developed to support those living with cerebrovascular disease and their caregivers.
Goal: To treat stroke patients who have sleep apnea, which can be a risk factor for a future stroke, as well as to address underlying sleep conditions that occur after a patient has a stroke.
The clinic is designed to help stroke patients with sleep disturbances follow with one doctor instead of visiting multiple clinics for these conditions, and is the first of its kind in central Ohio. In this clinic, a neurologist with both stroke and sleep expertise provides accurate assessment and diagnosis of patients with a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke and sleep apnea. The neurologist will identify, through physical exam and questionnaires, if a person meets criteria for sleep apnea. This leads to an at-home or in-lab sleep study depending on the patient’s risk factors and disease severity. Treatments for sleep apnea include CPAP, oral mandibular devices and the newly implanted hypoglossal nerve stimulator called Inspire.
Stroke can also cause other sleep disturbances. This clinic will help address those conditions, such as insomnia, restless legs syndrome and parasomnias. Treatments for insomnia include various medications as well as gold standard cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) treatment.
