- Lead Advanced Practice Provider: Parkinson’s Disease Multidisciplinary Clinic
A critical mission of the Neurology department at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center is to provide highly skilled diagnostic services and personalized, comprehensive care for neurological disorders, at a level of expertise typically only available at academic tertiary medical centers. The following list of clinics were developed to support those living with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders, and their caregivers.
Goal: To provide accurate assessment and diagnosis of functional movement disorders, symptom monitoring over time and evidence-based psychotherapy to treat functional movement symptoms.
Our clinic is supported by a multidisciplinary team of movement disorders neurologists, nurse practitioners and a licensed social worker. We work together to provide evidence-based treatment, which includes biweekly cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to assist patients with understanding their movements, identifying symptom triggers and learning cognitive and behavioral strategies that have been proven to reduce and eliminate symptoms. Patients will typically undergo six to eight sessions of focused CBT, until treatment goals are met. Concurrent intervention with physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy may be incorporated if appropriate.
Lead Physician: Pietro Mazzoni, MD
Lead Social Worker: Sarah Grim, LISW
Goal: To improve the quality of life for patients diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and build on the recommendations and treatments already provided by their primary neurologist.
This “one-stop shop” makes it easy for patients to receive best practice care from Parkinson’s-focused subspecialists, all in one location. Our clinic is supported by a multidisciplinary team comprising an advanced practice provider who works closely with physical, occupational and speech therapists; neuropsychologists; a dietitian; and a social worker to meet the various needs of patients with Parkinson’s disease. We provide an extensive discussion regarding motor and nonmotor features of Parkinson’s disease with a focus on individualizing patient care.
